The American Community Survey Now Covers Over 29K
Cities
We have just
updated our data feeds associated with the American Community Survey,
which are available with the Premium ACS version of CDXZipStream.
This is the first time the Census Bureau has issued ACS data
aggregated over five years (2005 - 2009), which means it covers a lot
more smaller geographies in the U.S. For example, the number of
cities included in the survey has increased from 2,100 to over
29,500. To see all the geographies now covered in our ACS data
feeds, please download our ACS Support Data file.
If you're not
familiar with the American Community Survey, it is administered by
the U.S. Census Bureau to about 3 million households each
year. It has replaced the old "long form" that
was last used with the 2000 Census. So instead of being a single
snapshot of the U.S. population taken every ten years, it's a
continuously updated, ongoing survey that's a terrific source of
social, economic, and housing information. Subject areas covered
by our data feeds are: population, age, race, educational
attainment, school enrollment, housing value, rental rates, household
income, earnings by gender, household size, and marital status.
Please refer to the file CDXZipStream Data Feeds and Definitions
for a list of all data fields.
If you already
have the ACS Premium version, you can get the updated ACS feeds by
purchasing a data update, priced at $29.95. Just click on the
"License Information and Software Updates" icon on the
CDXZipStream toolbar, and select "Data Updates" to login to
your account and purchase an update. (Your user name is usually
the email address you used to purchase the software, but contact us
at support@cdxtech.com if you have a
problem.) You can then select the "Product
Management" under the My Account area of our website (on the
left-side menu), and click on "Download Data Files" to
download and install the new database. Alternatively, you can
also click on "Buy Data Updates" here to purchase
updates. If you have another version of CDXZipStream and would
like to upgrade to ACS Premium, you can also purchase the upgrade
through your online account. Please see our price list at the bottom for
upgrade pricing.
The Census
Bureau has stated it will be issuing zip code -based data from the
ACS with the next update for 2006-2010, and we will be adding this as
a new data feed in the future. Stay tuned!
