CDXZipStream

Welcome to the CDXZipStream June 2014 Newsletter

In this month's newsletter we review all the options for getting demographic data through CDXZipStream, and also highlight the CDXClosestZip function, which can identiy the closest as well as second- and thrid-closest ZIP codes to a target ZIP.

Our latest blog article is:

The demographics gathered by the U.S. Census Bureau, in both scope and availability, are pretty impressive compared to census data collected by other countries.  Consider taking advantage of this unique resource via CDXZipStream to better define your target audience, identify ideal locations for brick-and-mortar stores, and generally support your marketing program.

Fortunately, there are a lot of choices when it comes to the demographic data available in CDXZipStream, and we'd like to briefly outline what each demographic version offers.

Data in CDXZipStream is sourced from the decennial census or the American Community Survey (or ACS), both administered by the U.S. Census Bureau.   The decennial census covers age, household size, mortgage status, and population by gender and race.  The ACS is currently a more comprehensive survey covering age, individual earnings, educational attainment, household size, household income, housing value and rent, mortgage status, marital status, population by gender and race, and school enrollment.

Here are the demographic CDXZipStream versions:

CDXZipStream Population:  Cover population data from the 2010 Census

CDXZipStream Demographics:  Covers 2010 Census population data, along with premium ZIP code demographics.

CDXZipStream Premium:  Also includes ZIP code data from the 2010 and 2000 decennial census, and  state, county, CBSA (Core Based Statistical Area), and city data from the 2010 census.

CDXZipStream ACS Premium:  Includes all data described above, plus American Community Survey data based on state, county, CBSA, city, and ZIP codes.

Also available is a data feed for census tracts, which are smaller geographic areas that are about half the size of ZIP codes.  This is a separate purchase and can be used with any demographic version.   Census tract data is sourced from the ACS and covers the same demographic areas as described above for the ACS.   For more information on how to use census tract data, please refer to the article Get Census Tract Demographics in Microsoft Excel.

The version comparison listing here shows which data feeds are available with each version.  A detailed listing of the demographic variables associated with each data feed can also be downloaded here.  If you would like to upgrade to a demographic version, log in to your CDXTech.com account and in the "Product Management" area under "My Account", select "Upgrade Licenses" and proceed from there.

How to Identify the Closest ZIP Codes

The CDXClosestzip function of CDXZipStream can identify the closest as well as the second- and third-closest ZIP codes to a target ZIP location.  It can also return the associated distance from the target for any of the identified ZIP codes.  Not sure how something like this could support your business needs? Let's take a look at a few examples:

-  A janitorial service was awarded a contract to service several hundred locations of a national chain, and needed to identify both closest and second closest (backup) locations of their own that would provide their service to each chain store.

- A stadium seat and blanket supplier had licensing rights secured from several dozen state colleges , and needed to supply their products to a sporting goods retailer based on the closest (within 100 miles) colleges to each store location.

- A large healthcare provider, to advertise their growing system of stand-alone emergency care facilities, needed to identify the closest locations within 5 miles to the patients in their system and include that information in direct-mail flyers.

Here's a quick tutorial showing how it works:

CDXClosestZip is included in the CDXZipStream Lite, Basic, and Premium demographic versions.  It can also work in conjunction with the Canadian database to identify the closest Canadian postal codes.  If you need to upgrade your license to obtain this function, please log in to your CDXTech.com account and go to the "My Account" and "Product Management" areas to purchase an upgraded license.
