Welcome to the CDXZipStream November 2012 Newsletter
Well,
we're finally back to normal after Hurricane
Sandy, and thank you to all our clients for their
well wishes. In this newsletter we talk about the
recent release of CDXZipstream 11.1.4, and changes
to our route optimization template which now has
optional data fields that can be associated with
each stop of the optimized route. And the
U.S. Census Bureau will release next month (for
the first time) zip code demographics from the
American Community Survey.

Census
to Release New Zip Code
Demographics
On
December 6 the U.S. Census Bureau will release
5-year estimates from the American Community
Survey that will include data based on ZCTA (Zip
Code Tabulation Areas). ZCTA's are the
Census Bureau's close approximation to zip codes.
This is the first time zip code data has
been released for the ACS, which will help make
the wealth of information available from this
survey easier to access.
Note
that the American Community Survey has replaced
the old "long-form" of the ten-year census.
Since it's administered every year, it can
provide a much more up-to-date picture of the U.S.
population, covering areas such as household and
individual income, educational attainment, school
enrollment, housing value and mortgage data, and
more, that are not included in the census. To
obtain meaningful data at the zip code level, the
ACS is aggregated over the previous five-year time
period. Zip code demographics are particularly
valuable due to the availability of address
information of customers and potential
customers.
We
expect to release a new data feed based on the ACS
zip code data next month. We'll be keeping
you up to date on this effort in upcoming
newsletters. | |
Route
Optimization Template Now Has Optional Data
Fields
The
CDXZipStream route optimization template
(compatible with the MapPoint version and higher)
is available as a free download on our links
page, and now has three optional data fields that
will be retained with their original address
entries after optimization. For example, if
an address has associated data with it (such as
name, telephone number, etc.), this data can also
be entered in the template, and the same data is
retained with the optimized list of address
locations. If more than three fields are
associated with each entry, we recommend using a
unique identifier (such as a customer number) in
one of the fields, and then using Excel's vlookup
function to find the original entry and associated
data.
All
our templates pre-formatted and automated so that
users simply input their data, click a button or
two, and the desired output is returned to the
worksheet. Besides ease of use, they offer an
added advantage of accessing CDXZipStream
functionality directly via Visual Basic code,
meaning they are also faster for processing long
lists of addresses. To see the template in action
please see the YouTube video Route
Optimization with One
Click.

CDXZipStream
11.1.4 Release Includes New
Features
We've
just posted an updated version of CDXZipStream
that provides the following new
features:
-
The CDXTract data feed is now an option for all
demographic versions of CDXZipStream. This
feed contains a wide variety of demographics from
both the 2010 Census and American Community
Survey, down to the census tract level. To support
this feed, we also have a free downloadable Excel
template that can identify census tracts from
address information. This feed is an
invaluable tool for performing market research;
for more information please refer to our blog
article Get
2010 Census Tract Demographics in Microsoft
Excel. For a short tutorial
on how to use CDXTract, please see the YouTube
video Census
Tract Demographics for an Address
List. If you'd like to add
CDXTract to your version of CDXZipStream, call
1-877-CDX-TEC1 or email us at sales@cdxtech.com.
-
For those versions that use Microsoft MapPoint,
you can now automatically restart MapPoint after a
specified number of calculations. This
feature is available through the Application
Settings button (fourth from the left) on the main
CDXZipStream toolbar.
As
always, CDXZipStream updates are free to our
current clients. You can easily update your
version by clicking on the "License
Information and Software Updates" button on the
main toolbar and selecting "Product Updates".
The installation file will automatically
download. Then just run the downloaded file
and follow the instructions.
